Yeah, the best torque curves I've ever seen come from cars with KK headers but I have no direct experience with them. They seem to have figured out primary sizing and length pretty well, their product is really top-notch on power and power delivery... But at a high price and they are not known for being extremely durable.
I am starting to explore other options for revving the S52 higher at this point... The harmonics in the stock crank are very destructive. I'm thinking the S54 crank could be an option if you wanted to stick with the S52 head/block. Gotta do a little more research. Obviously swapping an S54 in is the best answer, but I'm looking at all these shiny parts I have and I know that pretty much all of them would not transfer to an S54 swap.
Not to mention, the latest fastrack proposal with the possibility of having a VERY competitive classing for the E36 M3 again makes me really want to build to that ruleset. If that proposal goes through, an E36 could absolutely win a national championship in the new class.Comment

Would an S52 with stock flywheel and pullies have the same harmonic issues? I know on subarus they strongly recommend either pullies or flywheel due to crank harmonic issues.
What kind of work needs to be done to fit an S54 crank in an S50/2?
Alternatively, what about using an S50 or M52 and boring it to 3.2L?Comment

One of the suggestions is an aftermarket crank damper. The stock flywheel doesn't do any real harmonic damping aside from just being a very large mass.
I don't know if there is enough room to bore to a 3.2 in an M52 block. I suspect you'd end up with a 3.0 at best, but I never have really looked into it. In theory you could create a pretty oversquare engine and have a very high-revving motor without so much tendency for damage.
I know of one car with the S54 crank in an S50 or 52 bottom end. I need to talk more with the guy and see how much it really took to make it happen.Comment

Yep! It was a nice car, the seats had covers but the rest looked new. Mason strut bar, Z3 rack, M3 sway links, light weight flywheel, M coupe diff cover, euroweaves, various things he showed me.

Psh. My E30 had a giant rusty dent in the door and door sill, bent front valence, no lip, and a cracked hood. Didn't stop me. We really don't care about aesthetics, we like meeting and chilling with people.Comment

A missing front lip should be the last thing you worry about. I haven't made it to a meet yet b/c my car is not yet reliable. I'll definitely be coming out once I've got it squared away mechanically though.'88 iX Money Pit/Labor of LoveComment
