How do you drive your E30?

    • 1985 318i 5spd 105k miles.

I vowed to never redline my car after doing it 5 times for a mental motor checkup. She sounds healthy, I also ran some seafoam definitely cleared her up.
      I drive her 25mph at 4th gear .
I row gears 1-3 going to 15 mph.
      I go 0-60 in 30 seconds.
I want her to last forever, to never leave me stranded and never give her up, she'll be my only daily driver.

it's a slow slow m10 tank. it will last forever but it might take that much time to get there.

OP, you need a Camry. Also, cars are just cars, not a her or a him. They have no soul, they're machinery.

Try WOT, shift flat near the fuel cut, repeat, r3v match on the downshifts, launch it in to corners. E30s are boring if you don't drive them as hard as they can be driven, and they're overbuilt to a level that can typically take the abuse.

Seems like a strange first post.

Its funny how these kinds of posts always end up on forums, car enthusiasts are weird. Subaru forums are hilarious for it. So many people claim to sit in their driveway idling their car away until it hits operating temp, then sitting in the driveway with their car running with their turbo timers ticking down for 15 minutes - idling Subarus across the world. BMW owners not using indicators to stop the wear on the stalks is another good one. Honda owners not going over 3000 rpm to not wear out the v-tech solenoids. Camry owners not putting on headlights until the last second to save on bulb filaments.

my mentor once said, "if you own an M car, and you shift under 4k RPM - just give up and sell the fuckin thing to someone who will drive it correctly." that is forever etched into my brain, and i think of it every time i jump in for a drive.

Warm it up on the way to the track, fuel it up at the nearest station, then drive it until it runs out of gas.

(you do carry an extra couple gallons to the track, right?)

These Cars love to be driven hard, give it what it wants.

I baby it until it reaches operating temp, then I drive it like I stole it. I'll bring it to the limiter once or twice a day, it is a weekend car after all.

BMWs don't usually make peak power until close to redline, which is especially true of the 4 cylinders. it's not going to hurt anything, the engine was designed to run flat out on the autobahn for hours at a time. it might be "slow" to get there but so what?

I often put around town at the speed limit, but if I get a clear stretch of road or an opportunity to bang the rev limiter, I'm going to do it. Otherwise, it would be like being married to a porn star and never having sex. Are you saving her for the next guy? Why?

You don't have to abuse it, but driving in 4th gear at 25mph with an M10 is probably doing more harm than good. They are geared the way they are for a reason. 3rd at 25mph is almost overkill - I often do 2nd and that's with 4.10s and an M20. It's pretty happy right there.

The 1.8 M10 begs to be redlined every day at least several times. I drove them in the mountains for 5-6 years. What's most important is to use the right oil for your location that lubes the cam properly.

Okay, now that I've been able to remember his username, I've done a lil research. I think this thread was posted by a spam bot that recycles posts, and happened to pick up Sonny's thread. The post is identical. Either way, I think OP can be banned.
