Friday Morning I was off work and needed to take a drive. Since the MR2 is gone now and the BMW is the only car for a few more days, I decided to take the wagon out and see how she does on Angeles Crest Highway. It was pretty good until the heavy hitters showed up...

It only took me a month to install this!.. Glad I did.

One of these days I need to get this car detailed inside and out... one of these days. The windshield still needs to get done and Im lagging on that for no other reason than May has sucked for so many reasons. Its nearly over though

Well, lots of work done and money spent and no pics to show of it except a young kid washing the car...

Tranny was pulled and the following was done:

    -Detents (~2 were completely stuck)

-Shifter Cup, joint, shift carrier was replaced

-New OEM clutch, old on wasnt bad, but the tranny was out soo.... $$$

Overall it feels much tighter. Next is installing some new parts I bought once the new windshield goes in

After collecting a lot of dust recently, the car suddenly was thrust into action. I had an ambitious plan to get the BMW dropped off to Bullet Performance and also have him them do a PPI on my MR2, so when the MR2 wasn’t starting with its new ECU and I was given the opportunity to grab my old ECU back I jumped in the Wagon to go get it. I promised my wife I’d be back within an hour so I was hustling to get there. 60 miles round trip and on the way the fuel light turned on. Cluster said I had about 65 miles until empty so I thought I’d be fine. The trip took longer so I was really moving to get back and with 2 exits to go the MPG reading went flat. I got worried and took the next exit and when I made the right turn off the freeway off ramp, she gave up, with the Shell within walking distance... sigh... luckily AAA only took 15 minutes to get there once the dispatcher sent the call for help. Still went to Shell to fill er up.

With that adventure out of the way, I took both cars down this morning. It was fun seeing my MR2 driven, my buddy was enjoying himself and snapped this pic while we cruising.

However we did get bored and did some 5th gear pulls and needless to say the M54 pulled a lot harder than the little 2ZZ. My buddy wanted to rematch with the MR2 in 4th, while I stayed in 5th and that did it. Still a fun 2car combo to have. Hopefully Bullet Performance won’t take too long and doesn’t find much more “while we’re in there’s” haha

Currently the plan is to replace the detents, the clutch and maybe the shifter pieces, but we’ll wait and see...

    UPDATE:

I replaced the dead CAB this weekend before taking the car on a ~500 mile roundtrip to put the wagons hauling abilities to use. Started working on it Friday night just in case I got stuck. Also wanted to get an early start in case it went easy so I could tackle both sides, but that wasnt to be the case...

TLDR; I installed it, but it took longer than 5 minutes

The parts that all will eventually go on:

I got the lollipop off fairly easily, then used a 2-jaw puller to get the remaining bushing off the arm.

    Dead

Threw on some dish soap and started hammering the new CAB on, but it stopped after just barely getting on. It was already kinda late, and I didnt want to be that neighbor hammering away into the night so I packed it up and figured I could get started the next morning. All I had left was to get the CAB on and then wrap it up.

Side by side: Old & New

In the morning, however, I wasnt making any progress hammering away. Got some windex to spray between the bushing and arm and still wasnt getting anywhere. After an hour of frustration I finally thought "This isnt working" so I pulled the CAB off again and decided to throw ALL the tricks at the install. Lubed up the bushing real nice, heated up the arm (nothing crazy, it was barely warm to the touch) and then sprayed it with windex. Put the bushing on the arm and hammered with some anger... and wouldnt you know it it went on all the way. Buttoned it all up, torqued everything and took it for a drive. Big improvement! The driverside CAB looks different than the one I removed from the passenger side, so Im guessing that was already replaced and though it still looks good I will tackle that one soon. I also really want to get the Strut Mounts done now as that is the most annoying thing now. No "Finished" pics, but yea...

Car drove the trip flawlessly, easily swallowed all the parts. I realized on the way back that I could've gotten away with a lot less "exposure" and likely only really needed to fold one of the two seats down.

Enjoying this car more and more as I put more miles on it...
