Awesome, and thanks for the update! Car looks great!

A leaking Koni isn’t out of the ordinary. Which is a bummer because they are quite compliant on the road.

E30 still is kinda like a truck compared to its nemesis.. the Miata.

Car looks great! I wouldn't be at all worried about 230F oil temps, especially with VR-1. That's ideal temps, it'll easily boil the moisture out of the oil and it is no where near hot enough to degrade the oil. I regularly see 275-300F oil temps in my corvette during HPDE sessions, I shut it down at 300.

Liking the update. What width are those Sparco FF1s? Really thinking about getting a set.

Much appreciated guys!! Looking forward to keeping this updated. Not going to panic on the oil front (will try to get some more airflow to the pan) and waiting to get my Koni out to their HQ for a fix.

Thank you! They are 15x7. Did not know they existed until I went to order my tires/wheels on tire rack. Was planning on 15x8 TR motor sports and saw these as an option. They are 15x7+ 25 and I have 15mm hub centric spacers so effectively 15x7 +10. They are super light for the price. Just over 11 lbs. Very happy with my decision and would recommend. As for the Wilwoods, since I am running the spacers, I haven’t tried without a spacer BUT it looks like there is a ton of room. I will throw one on without the spacer and report back but would be surprised if they did not clear.

Small update: After parking the car after the weekend up at NYST, I had a puddle under my rear shock. Needless to say, that went back to ground control and it’s been nothing short of a nightmare. Long story short, it doesn’t look like they will warranty it and even though they have my old shock as a core, I had to pay full price for a new one. This makes no sense to me but I guess it is what it is. Maybe one day I will just bite the bullet and go MCS and be done with it. When I jacked my car up to pull the shock on, the entire underside of the car was covered in oil. Basically, my oil pan gasket was shot and dripping into the drain area on the bell housing cover that covers the back half of the oil pan. It would then blow anything that drips under the whole car. I decided to just park the thing for a bit, pull the pan and see if it was baffled from the PO (it was not) and replace the gasket. After doing a ton of research, I was thinking I could just raise the motor a bunch and not drop the subframe but with the baffle in place, the tolerances were way too tight to try and get it in place and maneuver through the subframe. No baffle, it would have been easy. So I dropped the subframe. Honestly, it wasn’t nearly as bad as I thought. I’ll need an alignment but was able to put it back up by myself with a jack on the subframe and bungee cords keeping the struts in the wheel wells as it went up. I am now back on the road but still have a list of things to do. Next on the list will be the timing belt/water pump and new skid plate. I did the belt 2 years ago and the tensioner is squealing like crazy so that obviously makes me nervous. The water pump I did in the fall and it’s already weeping (Graf) so want to do that as well. As for the skid plate, the roads are brutal around me and just adds insurance so I am hesitant to remove it all together and the current plate I have (red46) is awesome, it provides 0 airflow to the pan. I decided to try a new one that looks like it will provided some flow the pan and hopefully help keep temps in check a bit more. I notice a massive difference in oil temps with and without the current skid plate. Hoping to have some more updates in the next month or so and hopefully a track day at NJMP, as it’s only a hour from me. Sure beats these 4 hour drives!

So an update of sorts… Kind of boring with limited pictures but have spent so much damn time working on this thing in the past month, it seems crazy to not update. So after replacing the oil pan gasket, I am happy to report that the gasket itself seems to be holding up well… that being said, I am still getting oil puddle in the drain hole of the bell hosing cover piece. Not nearly as much as before but some. It’s driving me nuts because for the life of me, I can’t figure out where it’s coming from. I guess it could be the rear main? I also need to do the trans vent tub mod because I am for sure getting fluid coming out of there and dripping down where the Clutch slave is. Over Memorial Day, I rained a solid 48 hours straight so I figured it would be a good time to get some stuff done on the car that I had been wanting to do. I decided to tackle the water pump and timing belt. I had been leaking a bit from the water pump and the belt was at least 2 or 3 years old at this point. Most importantly, the tensioner was making so much damn noise for the fist 10 minutes of the car being started, you thought the car was going to self destruct. This went pretty easily, outside of tensioning the belt way too tight the first time. I’m an idiot and clearly forgot that the tensioner is there for a reason and additional tension is not needed. None the less, glad it’s done and the car sounds so much better and is running awesome. At some point, on one of the few drives after the belt job, I started noticing popping in the front suspension in parking lots. I assumed this was my GC camber plates so I jacked the car up and started inspecting. What I noticed was with the car up in the air and turning lock to lock the rack appeared to be shifting internally. Confused, I pulled the boot back on one side and you could literally see the rack move about half way through the rotation. I have been running e36 racks (un powered) for quite some time and this is the 2nd time this has happened so this rack only last a year or so. At this point, I said “enough is enough” and convinced myself that having a power rack is worth the additional weight and power draw from the pump. I had a gold tag zhp rack hanging around so I ordered all of the stuff to convert my car back to power and some new tie rods and was on my way. I will say, it feels awesome. I still need an alignment but it’s kind of crazy how light it makes the car feel. I have been driving it without power steering for so long it’s honestly like a different car. The one draw back is that not having power steering muffles a lot of e NVH so it’s a bit odd having some of that back but makes it worth it. Finally, my front end clunk in parking lots is still there so I ordered new camber plates from GC. Mine are pretty old and I’m impulsive so hopefully this solves that. Next up will be getting my camber plates in and my new rear shocks (GC warranty has been a nightmare to deal with BTW) an alignment and then hopefully a track day at NJMP next month! Lastly, an updated interior shot. I tend to change my steering wheel/shift knob and other little things quite often just to change things up. Really into how the interior is shaping up. Next winter I plan to do a new dash (maybe flocked) and new gauges. I hate the way the ones that I have look and they are mechanical. Will switch to a set of VDOs that match a bit better and ideally not in the dash vent location. TBD though.

Sorry to hear about the GC debacle. I have been trying for 6mo to get new bolt rings from GC for my GC camber plates and they were so bad to deal with I bought Vorshlag pieces. Got a human on the phone, and same day shipping.

It’s crazy that it’s just me dealing with this. A part of me is mainly frustrated because I like their products a ton but their customer service has been awful. I am glad you got it sorted though.

An update! While Track Night in America is only 3 sessions, it’s pretty affordable for what it is and NJMP is only an hour from my house so I decided to trek the car down to Millville for TNIA.

It was held at Thunderbolt, which is by far the fastest track I have been on. It was a ton of fun but the first session was kind of a wash as I learned the track. Also, having a 4.10 rear, I was basically in 4th the entire track, outside of the main strait. The car was great with the exception of 2 oil related items.

The first being that I am still leaking enough oil out of my bell housing cover (engine oil) that it covers my trans and areas surrounding after a track day/ long drive. It’s for sure not my oil pan gasket, now that it’s been replaced and looks solid still under there. The assumption is the rear main? I guess over the winter, I will pull the trans and do the clutch/flywheel and seals… not looking forward to that.

The second issue was oil temps. I thought Having a new skid plate that allows for a ton of air flow to the pan would solve my issues. For the most part, it had but only on the street. High way and hard driving only saw temps up to 210. On the track though, after 10 minutes, I was up near 240 and the highest I saw was 245. I then backed off. After doing a ton of research on the Spece30 forums I am starting to think those are way inflated because of where I’m picking up temp. I have a remote housing/sandwich plate that has an in and out rubber line to it. Those lines are almost touching the header so my theory is, as that gets hotter, it’s heating the oil that’s flowing to the filter/housing. My water temps never got over 180* and just can’t buy that with the water being that cool and having near direct air flow to the pan, that the oil got so hot. Even without a cooler and with ambient being near 90* but who knows. Oil temps on these cars seem to be a bit of a mystery… Either way, I’m stoked with how the car felt and can’t wait to get back out to the next event.
Looking like 2 days at NYST in the fall, with Mass tuning again!

Also, got a new phone and messing around with the cool new camera is fun… Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

So I’m not sure if this is going to embed properly (appears I cant figure it out...) but I was able to finally upload one of the few laps that I filmed from TNIA at Thunderbolt.

Overall, the track was a ton of fun and this was the most comfortable I have felt in the car for sure and felt I was starting to push much harder than the previous track day.

One thing I notice when I watch back is despite now having power steering, I have a bad habit of shuffling the wheel around a lot of corners vs keeping my hands locked at 6/9. One of the plans this off season is to get harnesses for the passenger side so that I can have an instructor ride with me to help with technique.

Also, I was being pretty conservative with gear selection in the back section of the track. The 4.10 made it so that I could squeak by in 4th basically the whole track. In retrospect, I probably should have went down to 3rd for some of it but such is life…

I have a 2 day event coming up in October at NYST again and it can’t come soon enough. This car is such a blast. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Isnt it awesome to watch yourself driving! You start to see so many little things that you never noticed before. I agree you probably couldve kept your hands on the wheel the whole time without shuffling. Keep the updates coming!

Post a few more exterior pics, that one from the track was a teaser

Finally got around to refreshing the front suspension to match the back. Picked up new GC race plates with the hybrid insert, new front strut inserts from GC with new gland nuts and bump stops. The strut inserts that were in there were almost 10 years old and had to be tired. The camber plates probably could have been rebuilt but am a fan of the new design over the old one. Getting the car aligned Thursday but took it out this Am and so far it feels way better. I have a track weekend coming up 10-9 and am really looking forward to having the refreshed front suspension. One other thing I will be doing is new sway bar end links. I don’t have m3 sway bar attachments on the front so no matter what end links I try, the sway bar sits at a crazy angle when the car is lowered. Thanks to the spece30 group on Facebook, I found a solution. Ford Mondeo Estate end links. They allow you to remove the bottom bracket that bolts to the front control arm and should lower the bar closer to parallel. We will see when they come in from EBay Uk!

Super bummer you didn't get the sway bar tabs when you got the GC kit.

But definaly save your frame, those jack stands will chew them up then rust out.

                                Jack Pads

Those links are neat, but anytime you go coil over you really want adjustable end links take advantange of each corner balance adjustment and preload on the bar.
