My e30 Project... Mtech II sedan, Jlines, Vaders, M50 and much more...
I had a really busy day, but managed to get a little work done. I started to remove the rust in the trunk near the gasket
Pic of rust
Mark off areas to cut
And cut away
Removed
Cleaning out more rust
Instead of welding I chose to use fiber glass to repair this. It is more of a learning thing for me as I have never really used fiber glass
Kind of how it will look
Apply the resin
Then apply the sheet with resin on it
Now I am waiting for it to dry. I will fill the outside of the hole with fiberglass bondo stuff, then weld in a new steel lip for the trunk molding to go on. Tomorow I will buy some of the acid to put of rust from the paint shop. The next update should have a lot more work done and more info.
Fiberglass for the trunk lip isnt really a good idea. because you will be slamming the runk all the time and it will break more then likely.
Fiberglass doesnt stick well to metal either.
When you go to weld a lip back on there the fiberglass will get hot and peel away from the metal.
I have a few fiberglass threads if your interested in looking at them.
keep hard at it though. good job so far.
Good job so far, dont be discouraged body work is hard and takes time, i did it for like 6 months when i was 16, if i didnt injure my back in a dam car accident i would have pursued a career in it.
Thank you. I was thining of renting a booth, but after thinking about it I am pretty sure I will make a makeshift booth in my garage and just do it there.
Thank you. I am gonna go back and remove the fiberglass and weld in a plate there. I prob wont look nice because it is a tight area and I suck at welding, lol. But you dont see that area so I guess it is better to do it the right way. I looked for your fiberglass threads but couldnt find them?
Before I start it, I have rust on the roof of the car on both edges by the sunroof, right where the drains are. That also seems like a very tight and oddly shaped spot. Would it be fine for me to remove the rust, then use fiberglass to reshape the spot, then put a tad bit of filler over it?

Thanks man, it is just so time consuming and repetitieve, and i wont know if I did a good job till it maybe too late, but we will find out. Im sorry to hear about your back injury.

I would clean the rust out the best you can and spray a sealer on it then fill it in with a fiberglass bondo instead of a matt or just bondo.
then use bondo over that.
I wouldnt weld there unless you going to take down the headliner.
Today I made a little more progress. I started to mold in the antenna and i found a few low spots on my filler so I went over them.
After today all I should have left are to fix the rust on the roof, and the rear section, and fix the filler i laid today
Wetsanding
I found a low spot on the door
It was hard to capture
I banged it in to add filler
Did the hood
You can find the low spots from the dark colored areas
Here
and here
this seemed good
another low spot
I have to smooth out this area
I laid the filler
I smoothed out this area
And began this one
Now I started to work on the 240
Then I sanded the MT2 pod
Then I started to fill in the antenna
I cut a sheet out
and fit it
I formed a bump in it to fill in the hole
Spot welded it
Welding it
Done
Sanding it
Smoothed out
At this point it started to pour on me and the car. I had to hurry the car to my garage and dry it off
I smoothed this area out
I set filler on these areas
I also put it on two other small parts but didnt have pics.
Hopefully tomorow I will be done with the welding and ready to paint soon.

Thank you so much. That makes it a lot easier than to weld in that area. I have some fiberglass bondo so ill be doing that tomorow.
Be very wary of how much warping went on with that antenna fill. I welded small bits of steel like that to fill my windshield sprayers and door locks. I did a bunch of tack welds to try and keep the metal cool enough so it didn't warp. But even with that, it did a small bit of warpage and I had to put in a good amount of time making sure that it was smooth.

Thanks for the advice. Ill check over that tomorow to see if anything happened, but when I felt the area it seemed fine. Maybe because it was a small area and near a bend? Or maybe I am not that good at finding these things? I hope its not the latter.
