    No.

The unholy trinity is much more likely to be English design, Italian running gear, and French electricals.

^Yeah, but I bet you can stick a paperclip into something somewhere to reset that.

Yeah we didn't get the diesels here, I think all the way back to the original Disco. You can get the D5 here up to 2020 with a Td6... but it's supposedly the same engine as the LR3/4 so in theory it has the same issues but you tend to hear about DPF and EGR problems more than anything. Not sure if there are simply fewer D5s around (particularly diesels) or if there's something else different about them.
I am pretty interested in one as an XC90 replacement as they're very cheap. Delete the crap and hopefully enjoy.
The same motor in Jaguars and Citroens don't do the crank but they are pretty much the same, nobody's figured out an actual root cause. The D5s don't do it, and our Ford Rangers now use an evolution of that motor with a stronger crank and they don't do it either. So the factory know that its a problem however refuse to do something about it. You win some you lose some

Is the crank breaking and causing bearing failure because of oil pressure loss through the fracture when the engine continues to run, or are the bearings failing first? I'd expect a lot of heat damage to the journals in the case of the latter.

Snaps first, heat damage isn't bad if its caught early. Friend had one at his shop that seemed to run perfectly fine, just a bit of vibration at idle. The snap kept it 'keyed' together so it still transmitted power.
When someone figures out how to do plug and play M57 swaps, they will make a lot of money.

There are a few M57 swapped ones out there now. Seems reasonably doable, but M57s aren't far off hen's teeth here.
There are ~half a dozen M57 Land Rover swap groups out there in facebook land with decent info.

Mostly annoying that the ZF6HP is different on both ends between the two so you need an adapter plate on one end or the other.
Not sure if 8HP is an option at the moment outside of with an aftermarket controller.
EDC17 (Late E70 X5 M57 in NA) didn't come with an 8HP, but people smarter than me are poking around and saying it may yet be possible.
I do like the 5.0 AJ133 though. Sounds good and 375hp/375ftlb is definitely enough for me, it's just a pig on fuel...
