Lol. I don't even smoke. I just felt like saying it because company's have put two of their I6 motors together to form a v12. The m70 is two m20's.
Here's two 1j's together http://imgur.com/a/iDHWH#2Comment

many people seem to claim that you can use a bigger cam without vanos. im not sure why this is the case, for sure youd need to limit the amount of adjustment and add some stops to limit travel if thats even possible.89 E30 325is Lachs Silber - currently M20B31, M20B33 in the works, stroked to the hilt...

yeah, it doesn't make sense. if you're worried about piston/valve contact, you'd have the same limitations on absolute cam position with or without it. It's basically like people who think deleting whatever random stuff they don't know the function of will make a big increase in power.. I remember a guy locally with an E39 M5 that claimed it came from the factory without VANOS and made more power than a regular M5. :|
you can limit the travel in software. pretty simple - primarily you would limit the amount of cam retard. again, the limitations would be the same with our without VANOS.
deleting the electronic throttle is another one - the electronics are way faster than human perception; it's not like there's a 100ms lag or something. And the e-throttle linkage works poorly with a throttle cable, in a lot of ways it's significantly worse for throttle response & drivability (unless you only ever drive at WOT). Also, it costs more.Comment

Opinion time.
VQ37vhr
Decent engine, not light enough vs an LS to warrant it over the LS.
LS1
Practical choice, good power potential, not too heavy. If you want reliable power and don't care about originality, best choice.
Rotary engine. I say 2 13b's together
Light, good potential, oh wait, just saw the second part you're crazy or have multiple tens of thousands of dollars to spend on an engine.
1LR-GUE Hey a guy can dream
Don't even need to address it.
Coyote 5.0
Good choice, really expensive though. Heavier than an LS.
1/2JZ
Pig fat, heaviest engine on the list, overrated, cool if you want a drag car, oh wait, no it isn't, because it's more played out than pop music.
M30
Good engine, strong, not too terribly heavy, hard to fit. Cheap.
S54
If you want coolest, best not to do a swap a bunch of other people are doing. Costs a lot, not light. Good power NA, not much torque. If you're going to turbo it, save money and get a cheaper 24V I6.
S65
$$$$$ and not so much to show for it except cool factor.
4G63
Better off with an F20.Last edited by varg; 10-13-2015, 07:29 AM.Comment

They're close, still a lot of weight for a 2.5L I6. You get 2x+ the displacement and the weight further back and lower down with the LS

BUT! Most people nowadays are swapping in the iron blocks, because half the cost or less.
Hell I picked up my 5.3 for $500 a few years ago.
Still the best option for flat out power. 5.3 + boost = Permagrin. No E30 ClubOriginally posted by MrBurgundyAnyways, mustangs are gay and mini vans are faster than your car, you just have to deal with that.Comment

Yes, but cheap iron block truck engine != LS engine
All of those iron block junkyard special LQ4/9/L96/LY6/whatever else that people are putting in their cars these days and calling "LS" engines are GM V8s, but they aren't LS engines. Calling an LQ9 an LS engine is like calling an M50 an S54. True cast iron LS engines like the LSX are not cheap or junkyard bound. Those iron block truck engines may be an excellent ingredient in the cheap power recipe, but putting them in light cars like Miatas and E30s is senseless, stick them in something that wasn't made to go round corners like a fox body or a supra potstirComment
