    Half-way through a project update...

After having driven a few cars with much quicker steering racks I knew I wanted to replace mine. The only challenge was that mine was going to remain un-assisted so I was advised to avoid the Z3 rack. Ended up settling on a yellow tag E46 rack.

Finally had a chance to get working on it. First thing I noticed was how much crap was collecting in the fenders. If you've ever seen an E30 with rusted out lower front fenders, this is the culprit. Free weight reduction too!!

You have to keep clearing things out until you can see daylight in the bottom of the fender where the normal drain is

With that distraction out of the way, the steering rack job is fairly straight forward. Some silly delays because I haven't done the swap in several years, but relatively quickly and easily the old rack is out and the new one is (sort-of) ready to go in.

"Sort-of" being the key word, because I had previously bought the swap kit from garagistic with the spacers, but I didnt buy the steering coupler. I was again advised to also replace that.

Luckily I begged and pleaded and Sh3rpak!ng will help to wrap up the knuckle mods because Im out of town this weekend... I also need to get the car back together soon. This is as far as I'm at before I hand off the knuckle.

Finally, all this is pointless to just drive this around in LA city streets, so I had hinted to wifey that I want to hit a few track days this year. I finally just signed up for a track day with NASA at Buttonwillow in April, but I've also got my eye on a day at Sonoma raceway in July, which will be another HUGE bucket list for me. Its another epic California race track that I will get a chance to run after having gotten a chance to run on Laguna Seca most recently (2024!...) .

Goal for track days is to try and get to 4 in a year, so this is 2 tentatively circled on the calendar and I just need to find a way to sneak at least one more in... 2 more would be magical.

I don't currently have a vice or workbench. Drilling the coupler was a pain lol. Took me a good 2 hours to get it drilled and reassembled. Holding it with my foot on the ground, or between my feet.

Well... this sh!t took way too long to do. I was out of town the weekend following the removal/ destruction of the knuckle and I had Charlie help with drilling stuff out, but we underestimated garagistic's QC and after a longer-than-anticipated break I reconnected with him to drill out the additional holes for the bushing. Now its assembled and Im on a mission to get the car back together this weekend so I can only have ONE annoying project car.

If you see something wrong with my assembly, please tell me now before it gets installed!..

I wont likely take any pics of the reassembly because who cares, but once its all done I am going to have JMP do an alignment for me and maybe let them deal with some of the smaller, annoying things... or not. I just want it to be good to go for the 4/18 Buttonwillow track day.

Looks about the same as mine. I took a little out of the other side of that joint as well.

ID:	10158474 so I decided this weekend I was going to wrap it up. Went fairly well last night, except for the unplanned sauna. You can kinda see the ventilation on the side of the house in this pic but what you can see is the exit vent for the dryer. I was getting a nice dose of it while trying to get the installation done. Pretty much finished except the tie rod ends didn’t see to want to slide into place. Rack included the inner tie rods, so I bought what I thought was needed, the E36 outers. It all seemed correct but now Im second guessing myself since they didn’t go in. I’ll give it 15 minutes tomorrow during the day… that special trifecta of (1) working from home, (2) not having a kid to watch, and (3) being in that perfect 2-4pm window where the sun is no longer right above the car and is in the shade… Will report back, hopefully with a pic of the car on the ground…

Well, Monday didnt work then I procrastinated on Tuesday and figured I could do it at night. Well, nighttime rolled around & we had a nice sprinkle. As much as I didnt want to go out in the wet weather, I figured half of my body would be under the car so I went out and still couldnt get the tie-rod in. Annoyed and frustrated, I went inside and bitched & moaned to MrBurgundy who has been coaching me along the way with my Dad-brain confusion/ frustrations... he was gentle (always is) and pointed out my error. Do you see it?

Well, I didnt want to go back out as I had already come inside and was comfy, but after waking up at a very boomer 5am I said fuq it and got dressed and wrapped it up. Its sitting outside waiting for the green light from JMP to tow it out there and have them align the car and give it a once over before the upcoming track day. Felt good to see it off the jack-stands and outside. Will give yall an update on that once they are done and Im out and about driving it around, hopefully in the next few days.

One of my other 99-problems is the lack of a headunit in this car. Theres easy solutions, then there's The Tuman Show solutions. Heres the current headunit situation:

That wasnt going to cut it and while I wanted a modified OEM unit, I bought a era-correct and properly functioning Blaupunkt cassette headunit that I had Bluetooth added to it. This headunit came easily from Germany. The harness however has been another can of worms.

Heres my 'wiring diagram' provided via label on the headunit:

My German headunit had this scribbled above the connector

              and this below:

Wanting to do this as properly as possible, I stumbled upon a website called WebSpareParts (link below). They had a lovely harness for a very fair price. Unfortunately they are located in Portugal and our economic policy annoyed them so they wouldnt ship to me... I was able to wait out the TACO and snuck in an order, but then began the month long travel of this little harness from Portugal to Spain to France to the Netherlands finally across the Atlantic making its way all the way to Los Angeles only to get stuck at the Post Office because UPS handed it off the Post Office for final delivery and someone along the way dropped my house number on my street address... Another week of annoying calls to various customer service lines and a rush to the Post Office before it was sent back and I got my package... So happy to see this bag of wires & weird connectors in my possession!

Having already done some homework, I prepped the harness on the headunit and will be installing it once the car is back from JMP.

It will be nice to have a functioning stereo on the long drive up to Buttonwillow, and I can finally bust out the cassettes again... Good times...

Trying to put the tie rods in upside down? Oh brother... you must be smoking that good stuff out there in Cali.

Well, its driving... Heres its ugly side. Please be distracted by the lovely clouds and other BMWs...

Grabbed the car during my lunch break. $80 Lyft (with tip ) and promptly jumped back on the road and drove the ~30 miles back to work sitting in mid-day LA traffic. Was really enjoying myself, love the car...

As for the first impression driving in traffic on a freeway is not a great reflection on how the rack feels. Its quick, thats all I can say. I plan to go on a drive tomorrow, but for some f**kin reason the car is made a terrible metal on metal noise as I pulled into the parking garage. The garage effect made it sound horrific. Feels like something is dragging in the drivetrain, not the motor. Nothing looked out of place on the first glance, and as much as I thought I was done, I have to see WTF is going on. SIGH

Bump steer kit, to increase it instead of fixing it.
