I love it... the tin foil hats are coming out...

I have considered digging a hole in my backyard...and buying a generator too, amongst other things

All of this sounds like way too much work.

Luckily I dont have a wife or kids, so I'll just die.

Ha, you're all over the place. Flying is way more fun than driving, you'll cruise past the cost of a car in no time. Flight school is crazy expensive now compared to when I was in flight school in 2008.

Are the diesels junk like the V8 Cayennes? A buddy of mine had one, they're startlingly cheap. Pain in the ass to work on too apparently. The alternator went out and it was a massive pain to remove it, and he found out the OE water cooled alternators are like $1500. He had his fun with it and got rid of it, which took a while because nobody wants them lol. I'm sticking with the M21 325ix. I've convinced myself that's a good idea. There's no way the BMW Lego thing carries over to that and you can just bolt the M20 ix oil pan to an M21, right?

Old pickup with stupid simple V8 + aux tank. Put all your stuff + dirtbike in the back.

Alternatively, Jeep TJ with TDI swap. It's been done.

now this is a fun conversation to have.

                step 1: buy a 100 series Landcruiser or LX470 (200 series if you're a baller)

step 2: realize you're just going to be a loot drop for someone more prepared or on a shorter fuse than you.

step 3: Enjoy your Landcruiser until the nukes start flying

As others have mentioned, a mechanical diesel truck with an additional tank (and possibly a larger tank in the OE location) with bugout trailer with a couple adventure bikes is going to give you the best chance of getting out of a chaotic city if whatever is happening isn't thermonuclear and you can actually get to your vehicle.

idk about bottom line.. but if you're not fit and you don't have any skills, you're gunna die regardless of how cool your apocalypse vehicle is.

Without going full on prepper and hitting you with a zillion things: assess your home situation based on the Red Cross's emergency supplies protocol.

Learn what to include in a survival kit should an emergency or disaster occur. The Red Cross lists what you should have at a minimum as well as other additions.

That's a bare minimum non-prepper, tinfoil hat, computer chips in the brain, Skynet is self-aware list that you should probably start with that will get you through normal disaster situations before having to worry about fleeing the city to go live in the mountains Red Dawn style

I would think of this as a stages thing:

Stage 1: Immediate Survival - How can you stay in your current house for several days or a week without leaving. Assuming you make it past the initial event, there is going to be chaos on the streets. You should wait until it dies down and you can actually assess the situation before doing anything. If there is looting an unrest, you're going to want to stay safe in your house without needing to leave for food, water, or going to the bathroom. Assume no electricity or running water.

Stage 2: Escape the City - Use a dirt bike or adventure bike to get out by going where cars can't. Plan a route and have extra food/fuel ready for the trip.

Stage 3: Continue Living - You should have already bought land out in the desert in an accessible, but unpopulated area. Put a trailer or some living space there. Probably have solar panels for power and some sort of access to potable water (well). Food and other supplies buried in a shipping container nearby. You want the place to be functional for you when you get there, but not lootable for some random person. This is probably where you would hide an old diesel Mercedes.

You already know what I'm going to say.

                      (1) Minimum of 500 miles on one fuel tank
That's where you're gonna have problems unless diesel... or aux/replacement tanks.

100 Series to meet your requirements:

Possible with a 40 gallon replacement tank, but if you want max range get the aux 40 gallon tank that replaces the spare tire area too. That's 80 gallons and makes the truck actually be able to go 800/1000 miles maybe.

Thus necessitating at the very least a rear bumper with tire swing out, and if you're gonna do that, get a front bullbar to balance it out, and sliders. And a roof rack.

Now be concerned about overloading the weight, and thus needing new suspension, and maybe a supercharger.

Oh hey, what I was gonna say.

I've owned my 100 for over a decade now, best vehicle.

But she's slow and drinks like a frat bro with endless family wealth.

If I had the scrillah, I would have retired her to backup and purchased a 200 when they dipped in value before COVID.

If this is family vehicle that will be used somewhat often, I'd suggest getting newest and best cared for LC/LX you can afford.

Use it for long trips and keep short miles off her if possible. Just be aware they get abysmal mileage.

                      Talk to Pasha / e30sd -- he's enjoying his 200.

If you have 10kay to throw at that thing, I'm willing to take a handout of 10kay.

Hell I think that is like the max you can give to someone one time as a gift, tax free.

THANKS SIMON FOR THE GIFT, LETS COORDINATE HOW YOU WANNA SEND THAT.

                            THANKS AGAIN.

I could potentially use it for bugout land, I've honestly been looking at land more away from people for years, just unsure where/when I'm going to actually do it.

If you make it out to me, we can vagabond and try to survive the apocolypse. Deal? THIS IS AN INVESTMENT.

But really, getting out of any major city, mine included... like others said would be etremely tough / lucky if you get out.

Look at any decent or even terrible movies on the subject that are a little grounded in reality.

Disgegard monsters/aliens/zombies... people trying to evacuate any city is not good. Humans turn into monsters themselves when it's their tribe vs yours.

Anyways... disregard bugout vehicle unless you want an excuse for an adventure vehicle, and worry about where you're gonna go, if you make it.

Max Gift amount for 2025 is $19,000 per person... luckily for me I don't have that kind of money sitting around to gift to others.

I was looking at what I would be able to get if I sold my TDI, which is $7500 in my pipe dream...

Problem is any decent truck/suv is going to be more than that, more cash on your end would be required (double even unless you find a killer deal) and there goes your decent MPG daily.
