I love it... the tin foil hats are coming out...

I have considered digging a hole in my backyard...and buying a generator too, amongst other things

All of this sounds like way too much work.

Luckily I dont have a wife or kids, so I'll just die.

Ha, you're all over the place. Flying is way more fun than driving, you'll cruise past the cost of a car in no time. Flight school is crazy expensive now compared to when I was in flight school in 2008.

Are the diesels junk like the V8 Cayennes? A buddy of mine had one, they're startlingly cheap. Pain in the ass to work on too apparently. The alternator went out and it was a massive pain to remove it, and he found out the OE water cooled alternators are like $1500. He had his fun with it and got rid of it, which took a while because nobody wants them lol. I'm sticking with the M21 325ix. I've convinced myself that's a good idea. There's no way the BMW Lego thing carries over to that and you can just bolt the M20 ix oil pan to an M21, right?

Old pickup with stupid simple V8 + aux tank. Put all your stuff + dirtbike in the back.

Alternatively, Jeep TJ with TDI swap. It's been done.

now this is a fun conversation to have.

                step 1: buy a 100 series Landcruiser or LX470 (200 series if you're a baller)

step 2: realize you're just going to be a loot drop for someone more prepared or on a shorter fuse than you.

step 3: Enjoy your Landcruiser until the nukes start flying

As others have mentioned, a mechanical diesel truck with an additional tank (and possibly a larger tank in the OE location) with bugout trailer with a couple adventure bikes is going to give you the best chance of getting out of a chaotic city if whatever is happening isn't thermonuclear and you can actually get to your vehicle.

idk about bottom line.. but if you're not fit and you don't have any skills, you're gunna die regardless of how cool your apocalypse vehicle is.

Without going full on prepper and hitting you with a zillion things: assess your home situation based on the Red Cross's emergency supplies protocol.

Learn what to include in a survival kit should an emergency or disaster occur. The Red Cross lists what you should have at a minimum as well as other additions.

That's a bare minimum non-prepper, tinfoil hat, computer chips in the brain, Skynet is self-aware list that you should probably start with that will get you through normal disaster situations before having to worry about fleeing the city to go live in the mountains Red Dawn style
