I can't say I'm a big fan of B&W, but I respect it. The image is still a single image (Unless you have shot multiple exposures on the same frame, but technically that still counts as one image since its still a single frame) What you do in a dark room is entirely different from taking multiple different pictures and combining them into a single image using a computer program. Heck, filters are what make B&W photography really pop. They are really a must have, as is the knowledge of how and when to use them.

What can I say, I'm mostly a fast sports photographer. For the most part, my subjects are race cars, airplanes and the occasional bicycle race. Sure there have been some pretty epic b&w sports photos shot in the past, but its the wrong medium most of the time. As is HDR. It will make a good shot look really odd (almost cartoon like) when the subject is the only thing sharp in the pic.

that was really good, my one criticism is some off the dissolves between scenes didn't really fit the mood. other than that i liked it a lot.

Have just been messing around a bit. The first 3 pics were with a canon eos 2-TI and the last one with an canon S-95.

Thanks. I know about the cuts, it was my first video and I rushed it to the presses lol. I didn't like the quick cuts of just normal and I am unfamiliar with whatever the hell free editor I was using. haha

So I picked up a Nikon d40 last night, and was wondering if there is a place to download the user manual so I can learn all the features. I've always been into photography but have never owned a DSLR.

Also, what are some of the must have lenses for Niikons? Mine just has the 18-55 and I believe a polarizing filter.

If lucky, the E36 will die peacefully, in its natural habitat, and be given the prestigious honor of donating its parts to an E30

Yeah I've never been a fan of the stock 18-55.

What I'd buy right now if I were you:

                  50mm 1.4D (~$125ish) or 1.4G (More $)
                  or
                  35mm 1.4G --- Maybe?

Then something longer. Maybe the 70-300? It's cheap, and the 70-200 2.8s are better lenses but find out what you like shooting and using the camera for before you spend a grand on a lens. The 50mm is STILL one of the best lenses you can buy.

You can always buy more lenses later. ENJOY photography. Get out there and shoot. Enjoy making pictures, don't just take pictures.

The 18-55 VR lens isn't a horrible lens. I've taken some good shots with mine. The issue you have is that there aren't many lenses that will work with that body, and the ones that do, are all cheap lenses (as far as I know.) You will need lenses with the focusing motors built in since the camera body doesn't have any. Look for a lens that works with a D3100 or 5100. The D40 is a DX format camera so if you run an FX (full frame) lens it will have a crop factor of 1.5, in otherwords a 300mm lens becomes a 450. Sometimes this isn't a big deal, other times its a bit of a pain. It depends what you are trying to shoot. This likely isn't an issue however since I don't know of any FX format lenses that will work with the d40 in the first place.

Here is some more info on your camera. http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d40.htm There is lots of info on your camera there.

                    Hope that helps,

no, a 50mm makes a killer portrait lens, the fstop is what makes a lens work in low light. it is a ratio lens diameter to lens front to sensor. the closer to 1 you get the more light gets in.

50mm is what you eye sees prospectively (distortion)
any number less than 50mm seems to bulge in the middle and see "more"
any number greater than 50mm and appears to "zoom" in on the target and you also see less surroundings.

8mm-35mm people love to shoot buildings and cars with.
35mm-140mm is great for shooting people.
200-1600 people use these to get those very specific type of shots, sports, cars on tracks, etc

granted there are 100s of combos that you will see. rent a few and see what you like best. this weekend i be shooting buildings at night so im renting a 10-22mm lens, bc my 18-135mm isnt wide enough.

but the 50mm 1.2/1.4 is a must have for a dslr
                        Much wow
                        I hate 4 doors
