Well, I also have a line on a 2003 Disco 2 with the facelift with aroudn 120k miles that was wrecked a bit. No damage to engine but its $500. Fuck, dunno what to do. I would not let a shop do it. I would put the engine in myself. And I feel like that site is full of shit on the estimated repair costs

    Thanks for the responses

I see some of you guys are shopping for Rovers. Here's my recommendations and advice. Take it for what you will. :)

Don't consider any P38 or Disco unless it's in A+ shape or you know exactly what's wrong with it and what's it's going to take to fix it. It can cost mega money to restore a neglected Landy. The nice ones are cheap too so take your time to find one.

As far as specific models I recommend the Disco 1 over the Disco 2. Disco 2’s are more complicated with more electronics and the electronics are quirky. It’s very common for them to have weird intermittent problems, especially with the ABS system. I’m not so sure about LR3/LR4’s. They are probably better.

Stay away from Freelander. Some people have had good luck with them but given all the horror stories they're not worth the gamble. Freelander 2 (LR2)’s are suppose to be pretty good though.

For the Rangie I’d personally skip over the P38 and look for a nice classic. 95’s are the most desirable so one of those would be the better investment. Look it over very carefully for rust too. A while back I saw a 2 door classic on craigslist. One of those would be cool.

Really though, if you want a Landy save your money and get a Series or Defender. Even if it needs a lot of work it’ll turn out to be a much more rewarding experience. :)

+1 on a defender. In the states they definitely hold they're value. Just be sure it's a legally imported car. The gov is crushing all the defenders they find that slip through.

Has yours not been returned yet? My deepest sympathies you had to go through that.

Nope, not yet. Am fortunate that an amazing lawyer offered to represent all 40 of those affected pro bono. Don't know where I'd be without him.

Got my power steering plumbed and working. ^_^

Made a battery hold down as mine was missing. ^_^

Every light bulb on the truck works now. ^_^

....and there is a mysterious drain through the dome lamp fuse....even though NONE of the lamps are on. Dome, courtesy, hood, etc....nothing is on. Of course the fuse also powers a ton of other shit. Elec seat relays, CD player, heated door locks, Shift interlock, audio.....

Good news, let it sit all weekend with the dome fuse out and it started right up this morning.

                    Horn quit working too.

                    Fog lamps broke off too.

Got a nice sheet of alum to make a steering guard though. ^_^

                        That's good! Hahah!

Anyone know what kind of signal the tach is looking for? I know it comes from the "W" on the alternator, which I don't have.

Thinking of just running the BMW tach wire to the Rover tach and see if it works.

                        Or aftermarket tach from Summit.

Or cut and splice in BMW cluster.....so everything is self contained.

Having an issue, and RPM would be nice to know to help diag it.

Honestly in the d90 I had no faith. Thought my friend was insane for taking inclines that felt vertical. After a while you get used to it haha. Scariest place I've been by far though. Pismo beach sand dunes.

My dad was a geologist. We had a '73 Bronco 302 to get out to way out places for his work. He took me on an exploration trip once at the top of Independence Pass near Aspen CO, so we were above timberline at 11 or 12,000 feet. Mid-70s maybe.

Old mine access road around a cirque, or bowl. Road is 100 years old and long grown over with grass and leans downhill now. It is dawn, cold, and everything is wet.

There is NOTHING below us for over 1000 feet - no trees, smooth, steep.

We are chugging along very slowly in low and it's getting a bit steep sidehill, giving me the creeps... and then the whole damn truck slides straight sideways on the wet grass about 3 feet…OFF the rounded off edge of this "road."

It tips WAY up on the driver's wheels as it digs into the dirt and stops. It feels like it's already going over. We freeze. No roll bar (would that do any good bouncing 1000 feet down a mountain?).

I'm ready to bail out, but my Dad is in the downhill seat and would go off the mountain without me. We didn't move for a bit - it stopped moving, but we weren't sure what was happening.

We decided I would open my door UP, like a hatch, and climb UP out the passenger side while putting my teenaged weight on the door edge to hold the truck down. He climbed across and up out of my door. We held onto that door until we decided it wasn't going to roll. It looked like about 45 degrees, but who knows.

We got away from it and looked it over. Gingerly got the tools out. (pre-cell phone, pre-CB radio, and besides we were in the middle of nowhere..who's gonna help?)

So we blew the rest of the morning digging very long trenches from the back wheels gradually back up onto the road. Probably 100 feet. We made the uphill trench good and deep so it would sit more level once the tires were in them…. the trick was backing up into the trench.

So my dear old dad climbed back down into that thing alone and made me stand away, while he started it up and very slowly - 4WL reverse - backed it up into those trenches. I was sure he was going down the mountain. It was still tipped way over, but couldn't slide any more sideways and seemed to settle down a bit on the uphill side.

He chugged back until it was up on the road. Then he backed it up probably a half mile around that bowl to a wider, flatter spot. We left it there and hiked the rest of the day.

I remember after that trip he had a roll bar installed and bought a CB radio, which he never turned on once, but it was there.
